As of the [[census]] of [[2000]], there are 6,602 people, 2,559 households, and 1,793 families residing in the township. The [[population density]] is 794.1/km² (2,056.2/mi²). There are 2,647 housing units at an average density of 318.4/km² (824.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 82.58% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 9.16% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.50% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.68% [[AsiaAsian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.02% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 4.89% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 10.77% of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There are 2,559 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.10.
