Harvard ricevette il proprio nome dal suo primo benefattore, [[John Harvard|John Harvard]]. Sebbene mai ufficialmente affiliata con una chiesa, l'università originariamente provvedeva istruzione per il clero congregazionista ed [[Unitarianismo|unitariano]].
