Il suo stile musicale è facilmente riconoscibile ma difficilmente si inserisce in un genere specifico: lo stesso Joel non sa dare ad esso una definizione piúpiù precisa di "musica elettronica, in mancanza di un nome migliore" (in inglese "for lack of a better name", da qui il nome del suo album del 2009).

Generalmente si inquadra nell'[[electro house|electro]]/[[progressive house]], anche se risente di forti influenze [[techno]], [[trance (musica)|trance]], [[tech-house]] e occasionalmente anche [[minimal]] e [[dubstep]], con accenni di musica leggera come in "Brazil (1st edit)", "Sleeping Beauty Pills" e "Creep" . Alcune delle sue tracce più conosciute sono ''Arguru'', ''Ghosts 'n' Stuff'' (con la voce del cantante dei [[Pendulum_(gruppo_musicale)|Pendulum]] [[Rob Swire]]), ''Raise your Weapon'', ''Sofi Needs a Ladder'', ''Strobe'' e ''Some Chords''.
