The protocol uses full or half [[Duplex (telecommunications)|duplex]] [[Synchronization|synchronous]] and [[Asynchronous communication|asynchronous]] links and allowed errors introduced in transmission to be detected and corrected. It was retained and extended for later versions of the DECnet protocol.
