Per la prima volta l'Entry Draft si svolse nel nuovo palazzetto, mentre l'edizione del [[NHL Entry Draft 1997|1997]] fu tenuta presso la vecchia [[Civic Arena]]. Le formazioni della National Hockey League selezionarono i migliori giocatori di [[hockey su ghiaccio]] provenienti dai campionati giovanili, universitari, o dai campionati europei. I [[Columbus Blue Jackets]] invece come seconda scelta puntarono sul [[Difensore (hockey su ghiaccio)|difensore]] canadese [[Ryan Murray]], proveniente dagli [[Everett Silvertips]] della [[Western Hockey League|WHL]], mentre i [[Montreal Canadiens]] scelsero in terza posizione il centro statunitense [[Alex Galchenyuk]] (figlio di [[Alexandr Galchenyuk]] che giocò in Italia con [[Hockey Club Junior Milano Vipers|Milano]] e [[Asiago Hockey 1935|Asiago]]) dei Sarnia Sting.
