In 1871 those provinces or regions east of the present Oder–Neisse line as part of the Prussian state were naturally incorporated into the German Empire created by Otto von Bismarck alike. But unlike the regions in what is today Germany, thoughalthough there hadwere beenstill large settled German communities in the territories east of the Oder–Neisse line - since the beginning of the 13th century (East Colonisation), Germans did not make up all of the population, and in a few regions they did not even make up a majority. In some areas, such as the Posen or the southern part of Upper Silesia, the majority was actually Polish.

The territories in question were East Brandenburg, Silesia, East Prussia, West Prussia, Pomerania and Posen.
