::::* Mitt Romney, born March 12 1947 in Michigan is the Governor of Massachusetts. Romney is not seeking a second term as Governor and has made several trips to swing states such as South Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania during recent years. Romney has also adopted more conservative views in what many see as an appeal to conservatives for a future nomination. Romney's accomplishments as the CEO of the 2002 Winter Olympics and as Governor of Massachusetts give him strong bipartisan appeal. Romney's plan to ensure every citizen in Massachusetts with private, market based insurance has also earned him bipartisan praise. Being from Massachusetts would be a problem in the GOP primary race, since the Bay State has a reputation as a bastion of liberalism, even though Republicans have held the governorship ever since Bill Weld succeeded Michael Dukakis in 1990. Boston's Big Dig was a project dating back to the Dukakis administration of the late 1980s which has had a number of problems with the Dig, including massive cost overruns, floods and a partial tunnel collapse in July 2006, killing one and injuring a second. In 2004, Romney unsuccessfully urged Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman, Matthew Amorello, to resign due to the problems with the Dig. Since the tunnel collapse, Romney has said he will take legal action to remove Amorello and has taken a lead role to ensure the public's safety.
