Cresciuta in ua fattoria di  Peru, New York, si laurea alla New York State College for Teachers (ora State University of New York at Albany, SUNY) con un B.Sc. in matematica nel 1954.<ref name="lohr">Lohr, Steve (August 6, 2002). </ref> Successivamente si laurea con un [[Master of Science|M.Sc.]] in mathematica all'[[Università del Michigan]] nel 1957 ed inizia a insegnare un una scuola di Peru, New York.<ref name="lasewicz">Lasewicz, Paul (April 5, 2003). </ref> Piena di debiti da pagare, entra a afar parte della [[IBM]] il 15 luglio 1957, pensando di rimanere solo fino a quando i suoi prestiti studenteschi non fossero stati pagati, ma alla fine vi trascorse l'intera carriera per 45 anni fino al 2002.
