A ''transsexual'' is a person who desires to have, or has, a different [[sex]] than s/he had at birth. One typical (though oversimplified) explanation is of a "man trapped in a woman's body" or vice versa. A transsexual makes or desires to make a transition from their birth sex to another, by medical means, normally this process is usually [[hormone|hormonally]] induced, and may include [[sexual reassignment surgery]].

Sometimes, for example in the [[Netherlands]], the term ''transgender'' is used to refer to "non-op transsexuals" - transsexuals who live as the opposite gender without undergoing sexual reassignment surgery, by choice rather than by necessity.
