And there is a third categorization, Solution mining, which depending on your definition of what a mine is, could be either of the first two, or different. Most who are involved or follow the industry would consider them different. A "quarry" is typically a mine for the extraction of industrial minerals like Stone, Marble, Silica Sand, etc. Significantly different methods are employed than would be used at a conventional open-pit mine.
