I need help for something I haven't run into in the books or this article - our Syrian hamster has started chewing on the bars of his cage, big time. We give him sticks to gnaw on, and he does, but he seems to be trying to escape the cage. (I say this because if I open the door of the cage while he's chewing he will immediately come out of the cage - but if I open the door other times, he'll just watch me.)

The cage has a wheel which he doesn't seem to care for and he has a hamster ball which he hates - he just sits in it and tries to bite his way out.

Any suggestions? I've been thinking about
* a bigger ball (the one he has is 6" in diameter)
* trying to come up with some kind of tubes-and-second-home arrangement
* ?

He has a couple of toys which he generally ignores.
