Il 16 aprile del 1994, in un viaggio verso Trinidad, Selvon muore a causa di un' insufficienza respiratoria. Le sue ceneri vengono interrate nel cimitero dell'Università delle Indie Occidentali.

Selvon è conosciuto per i suoi romanzi ''[[The Lonely Londoners]]'' (1956) e ''[[Moses Ascending]]'' (1975). Il romanzo ''[[A Brighter Sun]]'' (1952), spiega dettagliatamente la costruzione della [[Churchill-Roosevelt Highway]] a Trinidad, attraverso gli occhi di Tiger, un giovane lavoratore indiano. Altre opere importanti sono la collezione di racconti brevi ''Ways of Sunlight'' (1957), ''Turn Again Tiger'' (1958) e ''Those Who Eat the Cascadura'' (1972). Durante gli anni '70 e inizio '80, Selvon convertì diversi dei suoi romanzi in radio scripts, trasmesse dalla [[BBC]], le quali vennero raccolte in ''Eldorado West One'' (Peepal Tree Press, 1988) e ''Highway in the Sun'' ([[Peepal Tree Press]], 1991).

These consist of holograph manuscripts, typescripts, book proofs, manuscript notebooks, and correspondence.
