Disegnato dall'artista degli effetti visivi Phil Tippett,<ref>Biografia di Phil Tippett su [http://www.starwars.com/bio//philtippett.html StarWars.com].</ref> Jabba the Hutt è stato ispirato dall'anatomia di diverse specie animali. La struttura del suo corpo e i processi riproduttivi sono basati sui [[Annelida|vermi Anellidi]], animali privi di peli, di [[Scheletro (anatomia)|scheletro]] e [[Ermafroditismo|ermafroditi]]. La testa di Jabba fu modellata basandosi su quella di un serpente, completa di occhi a patata con le pupille a fessura e una bocca che si apre larga abbastanza da ingoiare una grossa preda. La sua pelle era umida, una caratteristica tipica degli [[Amphibia|anfibi]]. Lucas espresse la sua scontentezza dell'aspetto e dell'immobilità del pupazzo, lamentandosi che il pupazzo doveva essere spostato in giro per il set per filmare diverse scene. Nel commento alla Edizione Speciale in DVD di ''Il ritorno dello Jedi'', Lucas fa notare che se la tecnologia fosse stata disponibile nel 1983, Jabba the Hutt sarebbe stato un personaggio in CGI simile a quello che appare nella scena dell'Edizione Speciale di ''Una nuova speranza''.<ref name="Lucascommentary"/>

Lucas voiced displeasure in the puppet's appearance and immobility, complaining that the puppet had to be moved around the set to film different scenes. In the [[DVD]] commentary to the Special Edition of ''Return of the Jedi'', Lucas notes that if the technology had been available in 1983, Jabba the Hutt would have been a CGI character similar to the one that appears in the Special Edition scene of ''A New Hope''.<ref name="Lucascommentary"/>

Jabba the Hutt only speaks Huttese on film, but his lines are [[subtitle]]d in [[English (language)|English]].
