Il 26 marzo 2010, alle ore 21:25 (ora locale), si registrò una violenta esplosione nelle immediate vicinanze della corvetta ''Cheonan''<ref name="The sinking of the Cheonan">{{Cita news |url= httphttps://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/26/south.korea.ship.sinking/index.html |titolo= Report: South Korean navy ship sinks |accesso=26 marzo 2010 |editore=CNN}}</ref> che, assieme ad una unità gemella (la ''Sokcho'') stava operando nell'area.
