Fu direttore di ''[[American Mathematical Monthly]]'' dal 1942 al 1946 e presidente della [[Mathematical Association of America]] dal 1947 al 1948,<ref name="mactutor">{{MacTutor|id=Ford}}</ref> e da lui prendono nome i [[cerchio di Ford|cerchi di Ford]].<ref name="mactutor"/> Fu il padre del noto matematico [[Lester Random Ford Jr.]]<ref name="mactutor"/> e tra i suoi [[dottorato di ricerca|dottorandi]] vi fu [[Edwin F. Beckenbach|Edwin Beckenbach]].

Nel 1964 la MAA stabilì in suo onore i [[Lester R.
