== Storia ==
La [[New Japan Pro-Wrestling]] ([[New Japan Pro-Wrestling|NJPW]]) ha avutoorganizzato un torneo annuale sinfin dal [[1974]], anche se con nomi diversi, e molte di queste edizioni hanno visto vincitorela vittoria di [[Antonio Inoki]], padre fondatore della federazione. Dopo il ritiro di Inoki, nelNel [[1991]] la federazione ha promosso il G1 Climax come competizione tramite la quale mettere in mostra le più importanti stelle a sua disposizione, peraltro adottando lo stesso formato presente oggi; sebbene considerato una continuazione dei tornei precedenti, la [[New Japan Pro-Wrestling|NJPW]] riconosce quella del 1991 come la prima vera edizione del torneo.
Fin dai suoi albori, il vincitore del G1 Climax ottiene il diritto di combattere in un match valido per l'[[IWGP Heavyweight Championship]] a Wrestle Kingdom, l'evento in ''[[pay-per-view]]'' più importante della [[New Japan Pro-Wrestling]] ([[New Japan Pro-Wrestling|NJPW]]). Dal 2012 l'opportunità titolata ha preso la forma di un contratto contenuto in una valigetta simile a quella del [[Money in the Bank Ladder match|Money in the Bank]] utilizzata dalla [[WWE|World Wrestling Entertainment]] ([[WWE]]).
Sin dai suoi albori, il vincitore del G1 - qualora non fosse il campione in carica, che al contrario di quanto avviene nella New Japan Cup partecipa al torneo - ottiene il diritto di combattere in un match valido per l'[[IWGP Heavyweight Championship]], che dal 2012 ha preso la forma di un contratto da tenersi dentro una valigetta simile al [[Money in the Bank ladder match|Money in the Bank]] della [[WWE]] e da incassare necessariamente a Wrestle Kingdom, il principale evento della federazione che si tiene sempre il 4 gennaio al [[Tokyo Dome]]; al contrario della versione WWE, tuttavia, la ''shot'' ottenuta tramite il G1 deve essere difesa sino a questo evento. Nel 2015 è stato ridotto il numero di incontri da tenersi per evento, il che ha concesso più tempo ai wrestlers per riposarsi ma ha anche allungato la durata del torneo fino alle attuali quattro settimane.
In più occasioni i match del G1 vengono usati per lanciare nuove stelle facendo che sì che le nuove leve più promettenti ottengano inaspettate vittorie contro le leggende della federazione in modo da lanciare la loro carriera.
