ZERO / ZERO = WTF?
After reading a crappy thread on Neoseeker regarding what 0/0 is equal to, we were thrown into very deep philosophical thought (scratching out heads and saying “WTF” lots). The possibilities are:
- 0/0 = 0, because zero is nothing. The numerator is nothing, the denominator is nothing, therefore the answer must be nothing.
- 0/0 = 1, because anything divided by itself is one, and
- 0/0 = anything you like.
Let me elaborate on the last point a bit. 3*2=6. Therefore, 6/2=3. Still with me?
Anyway, 7236289476*0 = 0. Therefore, 0/0=7236289476. the problem with this is, any number multiplied by 0 is equal to 0, so 0/0 is equal to anything you want, or in more scientific terms, anything some scientist guy wants. This has been dismissed, because if it were true then 0 times must be equal to every number, so all numbers are equal, which is obviously not right.
But wait, 0*0=0. Therefore, 0/0=0. So 0/0= any positive number? Or does it work for negatives as well?
But what about the 0/0=1? How the hell does that work? If I have 10 apples and divide them amongst five gophers, each gopher gets 2 apples. If I have 0 apples, and divide them amongst 0 gophers, how the hell does each of the non-existent gophers get 1 apple? That kind of contradicts the 1*0=0, therefore 0/0=1 thing. How can both ways work? Does 0 even exist?!?!
