According to the INCOSE SEBoK (Systems Engineering Book of Knowledge) MBSE may be considered a "subset of digital engineering". INCOSE hosts an annual meeting on MBSE, as well as MBSE working groups.
Advantages
Compared to text-only documents, systems engineering models have several advantages:
* "A picture is worth more than a thousand words."
* Content can be better visualized and captured.
* The approach allows different views of the same model, so that, for example, information not relevant to a task can be hidden.
* Natural language is generally not unambiguous. Depending on prior knowledge, understanding or culture, statements are interpreted differently. Semiformal representation, on the other hand, is strict and unambiguous. This avoids misunderstandings.
* Architecture models created by MBSE allow strict traceability of all known dependencies.
* Architecture models can be developed in an interdisciplinary manner involving different engineering disciplines. See also: digital twin and V-model.
* The strict and unambiguous model representation supports automatic plausibility tests.
* Software can also be created directly from models. See also Model-Driven Software Development.
