(It also sidesteps the need to abide by {{t|Use mdy dates}}/{{t|Use dmy dates}}, which is [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_187#Date_formatting_outside_citations|alas currently very difficult]].) For other applications, the precise day might be desired; the format I'd suggest is Y-m-d, which is what the [[WP:CS1|common citation system]] currently defaults to.
