Quando era un bambino, Nelson Gardner era cagionevole di salute e [[asma]]tico, ma anni di allenamento gli permisero di lasciarsi alle spalle i malanni e infine di giocare a [[Football americano|football]] al college prima di arruolarsi nei [[United States Marine Corps|marines]].
