Il 5 ottobre, a [[No Mercy (2008)|No Mercy]], [[Dave Bautista|Batista]] sconfisse [[John Bradshaw Layfield|John "Bradshaw" Layfield]], diventando così il contendente n°1 del [[World Heavyweight Championship (WWE)|World Heavyweight Champion]] [[Chris Jericho]]. Nella puntata di ''[[WWE Raw|Raw]]'' del 6 ottobre il General Manager dello show, [[Mike Adamle]], annunciò quindi un match tra Jericho e Batista con in palio il [[World Heavyweight Championship (WWE)|World Heavyweight Championship]] per Cyber Sunday. Successivamente Adamle decise che il pubblico avrebbe scelto l'[[Tipi di match di wrestling|arbitro speciale]] dell'incontro tra i due tramite un sondaggio online: i tre candidati erano [[Randy Orton]], [[Shawn Michaels]] e [[Stone Cold Steve Austin|"Stone Cold" Steve Austin]].
