== Biography ==

MSteve Miller nacque da George "Sonny" Miller, un patologo, e Bertha, a jazz-influenced una cantante Jazz. Nel 1950, la famiglia si trasferi’ a Dallas, Texas. Le sue prime lezioni di chitarra gli furono impartite a soli cinque anni dal leggendario Les Paul, pioniere della chitarra elettrica e a sua volta cantautore. Miller è nato dal dottor George "Sonny" Miller, [[patologo]], jazz enthusiast and amateur recording engineer, and Bertha, a jazz-influenced singer. In 1950, the family moved to [[Dallas, Texas]]. His first guitar chords were taught to him by the legendary [[Les Paul]], pioneer of the electric guitar and also Miller's godfather. While at [[St. Mark's School of Texas]], Miller formed his first band, The Marksmen. Miller taught classmate [[Boz Scaggs|Royce Scaggs]] some guitar chords so he could join the band; Scaggs became better known by his nickname, [[Boz Scaggs|Boz]]. Miller attended the [[University of Wisconsin-Madison]] during the 1960s, where he formed [[The Ardells]]. Scaggs joined the Ardells the next year. [[Ben Sidran]] was added to the Ardells as a [[keyboardist]] the following year. Miller was only sixteen when he started college, and dropped out six credit hours shy of a literature degree. [[Les Paul]] encouraged young Miller to utilize his prodigal talents, and much of Miller's success has been attributed to Paul's tutelage during his childhood and teenage years.

Finalmente, nel 1967, Miller formo’ la Steve Miller Band (inizialmente chiamata col nome "The Steve Miller Blues Band”). Nel 1968 uscì il primo albun, Children of the Future, il primo di una serie di dischi appartenenti al genere dello “psychedelic blues” (Blues psichedelico), che al tempo impazzava nei locali beat e non solo di San Francisco. Al primo disco seguirono Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace e Number 5. Questi album, benche’ di ottima fattura, non ottennero il successo sperato.

Una svolta nella carriera della band fu il celebre album The Joker, edl 1973. Composto in uno stile meno orientato verso l’ hard-rock e un po’ meno ‘enigmatico’ e piu’ semplicistico, l’album ottenne un enorme successo, soprattutto la hit omonima, The Joker, appunto, che stette per lungo tempo in cima alle classifiche americane. "The Joker" hit Number One on the UK Singles Chart in September 1990 after it was used on a television commercial.

In [[1968 in music|1968]], Miller formed the '''Steve Miller Band''', with Miller handling vocals, and released an album, ''[[Children of the Future (album)|Children of the Future]]'', the first in a series of discs rooted solidly in the psychedelic blues style that dominated the [[San Francisco]] music scene at the time. Scaggs would leave the band after a couple of albums. ''[[Sailor (album)|Sailor]]'', ''[[Brave New World (Steve Miller Band album)|Brave New World]]'', ''[[Your Saving Grace]]'' and ''[[Number 5 (album)| Number 5]]'' followed. These albums performed respectably on the album charts but failed to yield a hit. This first period in Steve Miller's music formed part of double album compilation "Anthology" which includes a guest appearance on drums by the then Beatle Paul McCartney.

Seguirono Fly Like an Eagle (vola come un aquila) nel 1976 e Book of Dreams (libro dei sogni) nel 1977. Questi album segnarono l’inizio della carriera commerciale di Miller, entrambi raggiungendo le vette degli album piu’ venduti in america. Nonostante alcuni critici avessero accusato Miller di aver abbandonato le proprie origini di cantante blues “da locale”, i fans apprezzarono non poco le melodie e i testi delle canzoni della band di Steve che, nel 1977, inizio’ un tour negli stadi con gli Eagles.

Sull’ onda del successo, Miller si prese un periodo di pausa sai tour e dalle registrazioni, dal quale uscì nel 1981 con l’ album Circle of Love, un album ambizioso in uno stile totalmente nuovo che pero’ ottenne pochissimo successo e moltissime critiche. Così nel 1982 tornò al genere pop con un nuovo album: Abracadabra. Questo fu l’ultimo grande successo commerciale della band di Miller. Seguirono una serie di collezioni, album live e alcuni tentativi di trovare un nuovo sound e genere, che pero’ fallirono. Dal 1993 Miller si e’ definitivamente ritirato dalla sciena. Tuttavia non mancano sue recenti e sporadiche apparizioni in show televisivi o in collaborazione ad autori (ha recentemente collaborato con Paul McCartney). Tuttavia prima dell’ inizio del 2007 dichiaro’ che un nuovo album, chiamato "The Truth About The Lies", stava per essere pubblicato.

[[1973 in music|1973]]'s [[The Joker (album)|''The Joker'']] marked the start of the second phase of Miller's career: more pop-oriented and simplistic, the album featured a number one hit in the U.S. in the title track as well as several other popular tunes. In fact, "The Joker" hit Number One on the UK singles chart in September [[1990 in music|1990]].

Miller followed up [[The Joker (album)|''The Joker'']] with ''[[Fly Like an Eagle]]'' in [[1976 in music|1976]] and ''[[Book of Dreams]]'' in [[1977 in music|1977]]. This pair of albums represented the peak of Miller's commercial career, both reaching the top echelons of the album charts and spawning a seemingly-endless series of hit singles, including "Rock'n Me", "Take the Money and Run", "Jet Airliner" and "Jungle Love". While critics lambasted Miller for abandoning his more ambitious approach and socially-aware lyrics for simple pop-rock and derivative blues tunes, fans gravitated towards the catchy, melodic songs in great numbers, and the Steve Miller Band co-headlined a major stadium tour with the [[Eagles]] in 1977.

On the heels of this massive success, Miller took a long hiatus from recording and touring, emerging in [[1981 in music|1981]] with ''[[Circle of Love]]'', an ambitious album possibly intended to appease critics of his new style. Sales were disappointing, however, and in [[1982 in music|1982]] he returned to the pop formula with another hit album, [[Abracadabra (album)|''Abracadabra'']]. This was Miller's last great commercial success; a series of collections, live albums and attempts to find a new style appeared sporadically, but after 1993 Miller gave up producing records altogether. However, he collaborated with [[Paul McCartney]] on the former Beatle's [[1997 in music|1997]] Grammy-nominated album, ''[[Flaming Pie]]''.
