* davanti ad alcuni nomi di Paesi al plurale (''the U.S.'', ''the Netherlands'');

* davanti ai nomi di fiumi (''the [river] Thames'', ''the Mississippi [River]''), deserti (''the [desert] Sahara'')., mari e oceani (the Mediterranean [Sea], the Atlantic [Ocean] ), canali (the Suez Canal);

* davanti all'apparecchio televisivo, radio, telefono (''the TV'', ''the radio'', ''the phone'') ed Internet (''the Internet'');

* con gli aggettivi sostantivati: ''the old, the elderly, the rich, the poor, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured'', etc.

* si dice to go ''to the cinema'', ''to the theatre'';

* si dice ''the same'';

* davanti a nomi di hotel, teatri, cinema, musei o altri importanti edifici (the Sheraton Hotel, the Palace Theatre, the National Gallery, the Tour Eiffel, the White House, etc.);
