Anche i due scrittori Jonathan Clements ed Henel McCarty nella loro ''Anime Encyclopedia'' hanno aspramente criticato il personaggio, a parer loro aggiunto nella serie «come un cinico esercizio con il semplice scopo di sfornare delle ''action figure'' nuove»<ref>Evangelion, Revised 2015.</ref>. Chris Homer di ''The Fandom Post'' pubblicò nel 2019 una ''top 10'' dei migliori personaggi britannici dell'animazione giapponese; pur non includendo Mari nell'elenco finale, egli la inserì fra le «menzioni d'onore», lodando il suo atteggiamento estremamente spensierato e combattivo rispetto agli altri piloti di Evangelion.
