Master Data Services first shipped with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. Microsoft SQL Server 2016 introduced enhancements to Master Data Services, such as improved performance and security, and the ability to clear transaction logs, create custom indexes, share entity data between different models, and support for many-to-many relationships. In 2016 MDS team was migrated to china from Redmond and worked by group of 4 engineers under Janine Zhang leadership. Santhosh reddy vootukuri was the main lead of this project and responsible for adding many features, enhancements, security improvements to the overall MDS product. In 2019 there was a major work of revamping entire UI to html5 by removing silver light support as it was near to the end of the support from Microsoft.
