GitLab was created in 2011 by Ukrainian programmer Dmitriy Zaporozhets as a side project written in [[Ruby on Rails]]. Sytse Sijbrandij wanted to sell it as a service, which Zaporozhets agreed to. So the GitLab B.V. was founded in Utrecht in the Netherlands. Later Zaporozhets quit his job and started as CTO at GitLab.<ref>{{cite web |last=Degeler |first=Andrii |date=2014-06-04 |title=How GitHub rival GitLab is building a business with just 0.1% paying customers |url=https://thenextweb.com/news/github-rival-gitlab-building-business-just-0-1-paying-customers |website=TNX |access-date=2025-06-08}}</ref>
