Shell has 591 retail outlets in South Africa - one of the company's largest markets. This makes it the third-largest gas retailer in South Africa, after Engen and Astron Energy. It also operates explorative and extractive activities in the Karoo and off the Wild Coast.

The company also owns an oil refinery in Durban, which has been closed since the end of March 2022. On 6 May 2024, Shell indicated its intent to exit the South African downstream market. This includes its refining, transport, and retail offerings. It is as yet unknown what will happen to its gas stations.
