Il giaguaro è minacciato dalla [[Distruzione dell'habitat|perdita]] e dalla [[Frammentazione ambientale|frammentazione]] dell'habitat e dalle uccisioni illegali, sia come rappresaglia per le aggressioni al bestiame che per il commercio illegale di parti del suo corpo. Figura come «[[specie prossima alla minaccia]]» sulla [[Lista rossa IUCN|lista rossa della IUCN]] dal 2002, in quanto la sua popolazione è probabilmente diminuita del 20-25% dalla metà degli anni '90. La [[Diboscamento|deforestazione]] costituisce una grave minaccia in tutto il suo areale. La perdita dell'habitat è stata più rapida nelle regioni più secche, come le [[pampa]]s argentine e le praterie aride del Messico e degli Stati Uniti sud-occidentali.<ref name=iucn/>
Nel 2002 venne stimato che l'areale del giaguaro si era ridotto a circa il 46% di quello che era all'inizio del XX secolo.<ref name=Sanderson2002/> Nel 2018 è stato stimato che l'areale fosse diminuito del 55% nell'ultimo secolo. In Mexico, the jaguar is primarily threatened by [[poaching]].
