Set among rice fields and wetlands, sleepy Sriperumbudur jumped on to the world of manufacturing when Hyundai and Saint-Gobain started their operations. Sriperumbudur recently has been an attraction for major electronic and hardware manufacturing companies as they have started setting up shops in the past few years. It all began with [[Nokia]], the Finnish telecom majorgiant setting up a Telecom SEZ, first of its kind in the country at a cost of $ 100 million, along with all of its major suppliers. The unit has already begun production, and the company plans to pump-in more resources into the project. Other Nokia partners from Finland such as Salcomp and Perlos are also in the process of setting up their units in Nokia Zone.
Following suit was the US-based [[Flextronics]], which offers electronic manufacturing services (EMS), committing $ 100 million, for an industrial park, which would manufacture telecom equipments including handsets. Furthermore,
Taiwan-based Honhai-Foxconn, Samsung, US-based Motorola and Dell have also started work on building their manufacturing plants. It all began with Nokia and Flextronics, leading to a naturally created manufacturing hub for electronics, which then pulled in other companies.
