This school's girl's cross country team placed 2nd in Georgia in the 2006 AAA state meet for the second time in 3 years. Returning 2007 runners Bret McDaniel '10, Blais Hickey '09, and Victoria Jackson '08 are expected to lead this year's squad back to the top of the podium. The Raider football team is coached by Kent Sparks, who led the team to a first year mark of 4-6 in 2006. The men's lacrosse team, in just its fourth season of varsity play in 2007, has made impressive strides, led by its first year coach Bentley Boger. Boger, a local youth-coaching legend who made his mark with three straight years of undefeated teams at the middle school level, was recognized as the Georgia Youth Coach of the Year in 2006 by the Georgia chapter of US Lacrosse. The 2007 edition of the Raider lacrosse program was led by senior captains Kyle Green '07 and Jason Sampson '07, with support from outstanding sophomores David Allen '09, recipient of the Raider Award for all-around contributions to the team, and Jack Boger '09, the coach's son who led the team in assists. Goalie Camp Schweers '09, also a key young contributor, backs a strong defense. The baseball team at the school is perhaps Riverwood's marquee program, being a perennial region title contender and producing several major league players throughout its existence. Tyler Thornburg '07, an outfielder and pitcher, has committed to play at Charleston Southern, a midmajor DI school. The 2007 team is currently deep in the playoffs, and with its powerful #2 seending and home field advantage could bring home serious hardware. The 2007 men's tennis team received the GHSA AAA runner up trophy, falling in the finals to eight-time state champion Westminster School, and was led by seniors Jourdon Johnson '07 and Harrison Winter '07. At the 2007 GHSA AAA mens' track meet Amaechi Morton '08 placed 2nd in the 400 meters and was STATE CHAMPION in the 300m hurdles, while Michael Hermance '07 placed 2nd in the 800 meters, good for a 5th place overall finish. The girls' track team, led by third place finisher Blais Hickey '09 in the mile, also placed 5th.
