In [[214 BC]], Philip again tried his hand atattempted an Illyrian invasion by sea. He sent a fleet of 120 lembi up the Aous (modern Vjosa) river and attacked [[Apollonia]], and with his army captured Oricum, which was lightly defended.<sup><small>[[#Notes|8]]</small></sub>
 
The Roman [[praetor]] M. Valerius Laevinus who had been placed in command at [[Brundisium]] to continue the watch on the movements of Philip<sup><small>[[#Notes|9]]</small></sub>, upon recieving word from Oricum of events in Illyria, crossed over with his fleet and army. Landing at Oricum, as Philip had left it only lightly garrisoned, M. Valerius was able to retake the town with little fighting.
