Lo [[showrunner]] [[Jesse Armstrong]] inizialmente aveva concepito la serie come un semplice film sugli importanti [[Magnate|magnati]] Murdoch, ma la sceneggiatura non arrivògiunse mai inalla fase di produzione; perciò Armstrong alla fine ampliò tutta la vicenda per spalmarla in una serie, per includerci anche il panorama di [[Wall Street]], che secondo lui «si adattava meglio a un formato televisivo che a un lungometraggio».
