L'ultimo vescovo prima della [[Riforma protestante]] e della soppressione delle diocesi cattoliche fu [[James Beaton (1517-1603)|James Beaton]], che riparò in [[Francia]], a [[Parigi]], dove morì il 24 aprile [[1603]]<ref>Nel 1570 (effettivamente nel 1571) l'arcidiocesi cattolica venne di fatto soppressa in seguito alla riforma protestante, ma nel 1598 re [[Giacomo VI di Scozia]] (poi Giacomo I d'Inghilterra) restituì titolo (senza giurisdizione) e rendite a Beaton. La diocesi protestante della [[Chiesa episcopale scozzese]] continuò ufficialmente fino al 1638, e poi fino al 1688 quando le furono tolte tutte le chiese e i beni per assegnarli alla [[Chiesa di Scozia]] "riformata" (presbiteriana), ma è continuata di fatto fino a oggi; dal 1837 è denominata "[[diocesi di Glasgow e Galloway]]".</ref>.
