Apparently inspired largely by [[Akira Toriyama]]'s popular ''[[Dr. Slump]]'', ''Robby the Rascal'' is the story of Robby (Robotchi), a fun-loving, mischievous robot with a TV set in his stomach. Robby lives in a peaceful village with various other robots, all created by the eccentric and somewhat lecherous Dr. Art Deco. Although he is an android, Robby has a warm, kind heart and is always willing to help out a friend in need. With his human girlfriend Tiffany (Kurumi), he gets into a variety of wacky adventures.

In [[Italia]] sono stati trasmessi tutti e 39 gli episodi su diverse [[televisioni locali]] (tra cui la [[Syndication (radiotelevisiva)|syndication]] di [[Junior Tv]]), dove viene saltuariamente replicato ancora oggi. Per quello che riguarda l'adattamento quasi tutti i nomi sono stati mantenuti uguali a quelli dell'edizione originale nipponica, con l'esclusione del protagonista rinominato ''Robottino''. Anche le sigle di apertura e chiusura sono quelle originali, a cui sono state sovraimpresse le scritte relative all'edizione italiana.

Al contrario di altre serie animate degli [[anni 1980|anni '80]] nelle repliche non ha subito [[Censura negli anime|censure]], probabilmente grazie al fatto di non essere passato su reti nazionali, per cui sono rimaste intatte le varie scene ed ammiccamenti di carattere sessuale, es: il dottor Deko che per sbaglio sfila la gonna a Sachiko o la stessa che, dopo un rovisono incidente, rimane con gli abiti strappati che mostrano un [[seno]], sulal falsariga di quanto accadeva spesso alla comandante del trio di cattivi delle [[Time Bokan]].

Negli [[Stati Uniti d'America]] è statao prodotto un [[lungometraggio]] montando e rieditando alcune episodi, dal titolo ''Robby the Rascal'' (letteralmente ''Robby il birbante''), prodotto dalla Kidpix Productions di Jim Terry (''[[Force Five]]'') e distribuito nel mercato [[home video]] nel 1985.
