Today the party has distanced itself from its ideological origins. Many within the Indian left do not recognize PWPI as a left-wing party, but as a party representing bourgeiousbourgeoisie interests. The party is accused of having cooperated with the right-wing extremist [[Shiv Sena]].
 
Within PWPI there is a clear division between the old leadership and younger politicians. In general the younger generation is considered as less ideologically inclined.
