It is named after [[Johnny Pesky]], who played second base, shortstop and third base for the Red Sox in 1942 and, after serving in [[World War II]], 1946 to 1952. The pole sits only 302 feet away from home plate.
According to Pesky, the nickname was coined by former [[Red Sox]] pitcher [[Mel Parnell]]. Parnell thought up the name after Pesky hit one or two of his six home runs at Fenway, right by the pole.
