Hi. Thanks for your message. I agree with you that large templates are indeed useful. I do not see that it is "progress" to replace one large, very useful template, with several categories. From what I understand, templates are supposed to aid navigation, and [[Template:British heritage railways]] does just that. I do not think that aesthetics is justification to delete a template. I have half a mind to recreate the template should it be deleted, as I bet half the people who voted never use/read/update the pages it links anyway!
