A series of pictures by a man identified as Kirk Johnson contain the precursor images to hello.jpg and some following. At this point, it is highly likely that Kirk Johnson is the "Goatse Man." Kirk Johnson is a regular poster to the [[newsgroup]] alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.male.anal, among others, and a rather simple analysis confirms this; it is unlikely that there is another practitioner of [[anal stretching]] with the same [[Mole (skin marking)|mole]] on the upper-left edge of his anus. Furthermore, both the gap.zip (see below) pictures and Kirk Johnson's pictures show the same large yellow [[buttplug]] being used.

The intent of the initial images were so shocking that many people immediately closed their web browsers upon initial download, leaving them with the initial impression that the picture depicted a man stretching open his anus. However, the picture, upon closer examination, actually depicts a hermaphrodite expanding his/her vagina. The photographs clearly depict an anus and male genitalia between the orafice in question.

He has been given many [[nickname]]s by various [[Internet]] communities, including "The Goatse Guy", "Goatse Man", "Matt", "Narayan", "Cavanah", "Bob Goatse", "Mr G.", "The Goatman", "The Receiver", "Stinger" (hello.jpg was originally passed around on [[Internet Relay Chat|IRC]] as _stinger.jpg, with the intent of prodding an [[IRC operator|op]]), "Gatasa", "Gman", "Goatsemon", "Goatse", "Gaping Ass Man", "Yam Sthruss", "Señor Goatse", "Fuuma Monou" and many others.
