Ruhnu (Swedish: Runö) is an island in the Baltic seaSea, controlled by Estonia. Administratively, Ruhnu belongs to the Saare County. Ruhnu has less than 100 inhabitants. Travel to Ruhnu is by weekly flights from Pärnu and Kuressaare in winter, twice weekly in summer, and irregular ferry service.
After World War I, the island was allocated to Estonia, but up tilluntil 1945 it was populated by Swedes and traditional Swedish law was used. Swedish people ran awayfled or were expelled when the Soviet occupation started in 1940, and the island was repopulated by Estonians. The number of inhabitants never exceeded 400, and in the 1970s, after a storm hit Ruhnu, most of thempeople were relocated. After Estonia became independent in 1991, homes were given back to the descendants of Swedes who once owned itthem. While most of them didn't return, they ocassionallyoccasionally visit the land of their forefathers.
Ruhnu is one of most remote continuously inhabited spots of the European Union.
