Caroline County was established in [[1728]] from [[Essex County, Virginia|Essex]], [[King and Queen County, Virginia|King and Queen]], and [[King William County, Virginia|King William]] counties. It was named for [[Queen Caroline]], the wife of [[George II]] of [[England]]. During the [[U.S. Civil War|Civil War]] [[Confederate]] troops under [[General]] [[George E.
