Founded in 1864 by Welsh immigrant Griffith Griffith and home to a population of about 2,000 in 2004. Griffith's [[granite]] [[quarry]], ''Penryn Granite Works'', supplied exceptionally strong raw material that can be found in the foundations of a number of California's landmark historical buildings. Griffith's diary notes he named the town for the [[Penrhyn]] [[slate]] [[quarry]] in [[Wales]] and many old monuments carry that Welsh spelling of the name. The site of Penryn Granite Works is now a 23 acre park. The quarry office building contains the Griffith Quarry Museum, staffed by volunteers and open on weekends from noon until 4:00 pm or by appointment. Griffith Quarry was added to the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 1977, and is also California Historic Landmark number 885.

[[Joel Parker Whitney]] owned thousands of acres of land in the Penryn area in the late 1800s. In the [[1890s]], about 1,000 [[Washingtonia|California fan palm]]s were planted along the boundaries of Whitney's [[Placer Citrus Colony Company]] citrus farming venture, and many still stand along English Colony Road. These palm trees, otherwise out of place among the native [[Sierra Nevada (US)|Sierra]] foothill oak forest, are a signature of the area.
