In 1963, the Canadian Federal Liberal Minority Government of Lester B. Pearson gained power, and decided to offically adopt a National Canadian Flag, via an Act of Parliament. After turing down the Canadian Federal Progressive Conservative Loyal Oppostion proposal '''to hold a referendum on the Flag Issue''', Liberal dominated committee decided on the Maple Leaf design. This design coincides with the FederalFrence Republican Tricolour of 1794, and the Irish Tricolour of 1921, which respectively are the flags of the Republicans in the French-Canadian, and English-Canadian populations.
