I too understand the sensitivities of the medical / health informatics debate for nursing - and in the spirit of wikiness made what I felt were the most appropriate changes. I felt this change was important because this page is directed towards nursing and (whether it is justified or not) there is a cultural bias within the nursing profession to not want to be classified as being a specialty of medicine. Nurse Informaticians themselves (speaking from my experience) don't define nursing informatics as a speciality of medical informatics (or biomedical informatics), so this page should reflect that view. -- Robin Carriere 2005-07-19
This article seems to need linking to ''''Nursing Diagnoses'''' but that article appears to be generated from information solely derived from North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (Nanda). However the NANDA article makes no mention that they [NANDA] now conform to:
'''"International Organization for Standardization"'''
'''ISO 18104:2003'''
'''Health informatics -- Integration of a reference terminology model for nursing.'''
But they do! - I checked.
[No doubt NANDA wants all the publicity itself, since it was first to draw up a Nursing Diagnoses.]
And I can't see this standard mentioned either in this article here.
But I can't see how to do it simply yet without creating some confusion; and am to busy right now to study it.
It also links to a '''List of nursing diagnoses''' which I thought was informative.
Both articles misses out that this grew out of a 'want' by the hospital trustees to find a way to charge the patients insurance company for things done to their insuree. Talk of "'' enhancing the quality of care blah blah blah''" is just public relations spin to win the co-operation of the nursing staff and the patients; who are lead to believe that all this form filling will help to improve care for future patients. The spin is designed appeal to 'altruistic' senses in those concerned. No benefit that I am aware of has come out of it - if anything - care is getting worse as nurses get encouraged to do the more expensive actions at the expense of their more traditional caring roles... but that is probably just my POV.
