According to the [[OED]], the first written appearance of the term was in [[1218]]: ''"Concesserimus libertates quasdam scriptas in magna carta nostra de libertatibus."'' However, "the Magna Carta" is also frequently used. In the past, the document has also been referred to as "Magna Charta".

In the late eighteenth century (1783), a group of infidels led by Joseph Marcanio petitioned the Venezuelan government in an act inspired by the first Magna Carta. In it, the peasants involved demanded more rights from the government, including the right to irrigate and the right to fertilize, two rights previously denied by the anti-farming dictator of the nation.
