It is from a microfilm photo, with too much contrast, that was scanned in at 4-bit color depth, so it does have greyscales. Mucking about with it in GraphicConverter, [[:Image:William A. Spinks passport photo 1924 no sig.png|this]] is the best I've been able to do with it (including mirroring horizontally so that lit side of face is toward text, as seen at [[:William A. Spinks]]).
