ASPI was developed by Adaptec in the early 1990s. It was originally designed to support SCSI drives. Support for IDE and ATAPI interface was later added.
 
Microsoft has licensed the interface for used with its earlier operating systems. At the same time Microsoft developed [[SCSI Pass Through Interface]] (SPTI), an in-house substitute that worked on the NT platform. AfterWith the release of Windows XP, Microsoft dropped ASPI in favor of its own SPTI. User may still download ASPI from Adaptec.
 
A number of CD/DVD application vendors also offer their own implementation of ASPI layer.
