The 2005 New Orleans Flood struck the crescent city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
#REDIRECT:Effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans▼
Katrina made landfall in the early hours of August 29 2005. The eye of the storm passed just east of the City of New Orleans. Initially residents of the area believed that the city had been spared a catastrophe. Shortly after the weather cleared, however, breaches were found in the levee keeping Lake Pontchartrain's waters out of the city.
The flood is one the United States' worst natural disasters.
