On January 8, 1983, a riot began with 600-plus inmates in B-block taking 17 correction officers hostage and ended 53 hours later. Today Sing Sing houses more than 1700 prisoners. There are plans to convert the original 1825 cell block, which still stands, into a museum.

In the the late [[1990s], author and journalist Ted Conover became a New York State correctional officer because he found it the only way he could write about being one. He was assigned to Sing Sing and worked there for ten months. The resulting book, Newjack, was published in the early 2000s to great critical acclaim and some commercial success; however, some of those depicted in the book felt slightly betrayed even though Conover changed their names. The state's Department of Correctional Services also ordered that several pages related to security flaws at Sing Sing be removed from any version sent to inmates.
