::::Again this is a detail that can be hammered out later. First we need to determine if the consensus is to use autoformatting or not.

:# DMY (if this means numeric) is ambigous. I have frequently seen extension writers on mediawiki.org writing things like 8/7/2005. Is this 8th July or 7th June? From edit history I often determined that it was US style. I know US people are often ignoring international standards, but maybe we can start making a CHANGE (yes we can) and do not allow this ambigous date format.
:# In tables or in other places where space is scarce I prefer YYYY-MM-DD, but in texts this maybe is not so good. If exact days get linked, the WP software should redirect /wiki/1999-08-07 to things like /wiki/June_7,_1999 or vice versa. Or a bot should create redirects. Really YYYY-MM-DD is very much more compact, it should be allowed in tables.
:# If linking is not generally allowed I support the idea of allowing this via preferences. Maybe it would be good to additonally allow some change in display for autolinked dates, so also users who have this preference=ON can see what the default is, without going to edit mode.
