Ignatius was born into a royal family in 1491. When he was 16 he went to become an apprentice to “…Juan Velazquez, the treasurer of the kingdom of Castile.” While being a page he became addicted to gambling, and ladies. Although he was considered a knight, he had little knowledge of combat, beyond a few sword fighting tactics. When he was 30 he was defending the castle when the French attacked. He was struck by a canon ball which injured his legs, however, since the French respected him they took him back to his original home as oppose to taking him as a prisoner.
